How to Make Idli Taka Tak

It's a different taste recipe with the gravy of onion, garlic and tomatoes. So it's a very tempting and mouthwatering recipe. I am sure it will help you to convince your child to eat idli happily. It has to be garnished with kids all time favourite grated cheese. So enjoy this yummy recipe today.
You can enjoy this recipe as starter or breakfast also. It is even perfect choice for heavy snacks also. I always make this as single meal dinner.

Preparation time - 10 minutes
Cooking time - 25 to 30 minutes
Serves - 4 person

Ingredients to make Idli Taka Tak:

For Idli:

2 cup rice
1/2 cup urad dal - split black lintel
1/2 cup curd
Salt to taste
1/2 tea spoon fenugreek seeds
Oil for greasing
Fruit salt as needed

For Taka Tak gravy:

2 onions finely chopped
4 tomatoes blanched and finely chopped
1 tea spoon garlic paste
1 table spoon tomato ketch up
Salt to taste
1 tea spoon sugar
1 tea spoon red chilly powder
A pinch turmeric powder
1 table spoon oil

For garnishing:

Grated cheese
Finely chopped coriander leaves

Method to make Idli Taka Tak:

For Idli:

  • Soak rice, fenugreek seed and urad dal in separate container in lukewarm water for 2 to 3 hours.
  • After that drain excess water and grind to smooth paste. Add curd and salt and keep a side covered at warm place for 6 to 7 hours for fermentation. ( time may differ as per the season)
  • Add sufficient water in steamer and let it boil.
  • Grease idli stand with oil and place in steamer. 
  • Add sufficient fruit salt to idli better and mix well. Now place a spoon full of better in stand. Fill stand properly and steam for 20 to 25 minutes.
  • When ready remove and keep a side covered.

For Taka Tak gravy:

  • Heat oil in a pan and add garlic paste to it. Let it cook for 1 minute and add finely chopped onion to it. Cook till transparent.
  • Now add blanched and chopped tomatoes and cook them properly. 
  • Add tomato ketch up and spices to it. Mix well and cook for 4 to 5 minutes.

How to assemble:

  • Place one or two idlies in serving plate and pour some hot gravy over it. 
  • Garnish with grated cheese and coriander leaves. Repeat the same for remaining.
  • Hot and mouthwatering Idli TakaTak is ready to serve.
