Ingredients to make Veg. Momos:
For the dough:
2 cups all-purpose/refined flour
Salt to taste
3/4 cup lukewarm water
For the filling:
1 cup finely chopped cabbage
1 cup grated carrots
1/2 cup chopped bell peppers (any colour)
1/2 cup finely chopped spring onions
1/4 cup finely chopped mushrooms (optional)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch ginger, grated
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil (or any cooking oil)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Salt to taste
Finely chopped fresh coriander leaves
Method to make Veg. Momos:
For preparing the Dough:
· In a
large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.
· Gradually
add the lukewarm water and knead the mixture into a smooth and elastic dough.
Adjust the water if needed.
· Cover
the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20-30 minutes to improve its
texture.
For filling:
· In a
separate bowl, combine the finely chopped cabbage, grated carrots, chopped bell
peppers, spring onions, and mushrooms (if using).
· Add
minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, ground black pepper, and
salt to the vegetable mixture.
· Toss
all the ingredients together until the vegetables are well-coated with the
seasonings.
· Sprinkle
freshly chopped coriander leaves on top and mix well to infuse a burst of
freshness.
For assembling:
· Take
a small portion of the rested dough and roll it into a ball, then flatten it
into a circular shape with a diameter of around 3-4 inches using a rolling pin.
· Hold
the dough circle in your palm and place a spoonful of the prepared vegetable
filling in the centre.
· Start
pleating the edges of the dough towards the centre, folding them one by one to
create a round momo with a well-sealed top. Feel free to experiment with
different folding patterns for a touch of creativity.
· Repeat
the process until you've used up all the dough and vegetable filling.
For steaming:
· Lightly
grease the steamer trays to prevent the momos from sticking.
· Arrange
the assembled momos on the steamer trays, making sure they don't touch each
other to avoid sticking during steaming.
· Bring
water to a gentle boil in the steamer pot, then place the trays with the momos
inside.
· Steam
the momos for approximately 10-12 minutes or until the dough turns translucent,
and the vegetable filling is cooked and tender.
· Carefully
remove the steamed momos from the steamer and transfer them to a serving plate.
· Serve
these scrumptious veg momos hot, accompanied by a side of spicy tomato chutney
or a tangy dipping sauce of your choice.
