Dal Tadka Recipe - How to Make Yellow Dal Tadka at Home
Dal Tadka is one of the popular lentil dish from Indian cuisine. It is a comforting, flavorful & healthy lentil dish. In case you are vegetarian dal is a good source of protein.
It is served with plain rice/jeera rice or any Indian bread. It is an option of a simple hot dinner during winter/rainy season. This is a popular Indian dish, which is finished by tempering/tadka at the end.
This recipe is made with a protein rich blend of three types of healthy dals/lentils. It is made from toor dal, moong dal & masoor dal.
This is a perfectly spiced dish with creamy, garlicky & smoky flavors. As it is made with dals, onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes & ghee it is healthy combination. It provides proteins, fiber & vitamin B1.

Serves – 4 person
Ingredients to Make Dal Tadka
- ½ cup yellow moong dal
- ½ cup toor dal
- ½ cup masoor dal
- 1 table spoon ghee
- 1 tea spoon oil
- 1 tea spoon cumin seeds/jeera
- 2 to 3 red dry whole chilly
- 1 tea spoon freshly crushed ginger
- 1 tea spoon freshly crushed garlic
- Paste of one green chilly
- 1 big onion finely chopped
- Salt to taste
- 1 tomato finely chopped
- ½ tea spoon asafetida/hing
- ½ tea spoon turmeric powder
- 2 tea spoon red chili powder (I took Kashmiri)
- 1 tea spoon cumin coriander powder
- For tadka/tempering:
- 1 table spoon ghee
- 1 tea spoon cumin seeds
- A pinch asafetida
- 1 tea spoon garlic paste
- 1 tea spoon red chili powder
Method to Make Dal Tadka
For dal:
• Wash and soak dal in warm water for minimum 30 minutes. Pressure cook them.
• In a flat pan heat ghee & oil. Add cumin seeds to it. Let them crackle. Add ginger, garlic & green chili to it. Sauté for a minute. Now it is time to add onion to it. Cook for 2 minutes. Add chopped tomato & cook at medium flame till it is soft.
• Add all dry spices to it & cook until the fat separates.
• Add cooked dal to it & mix well. Let it boil for 3 to 4 minutes.
• Our dal is ready to serve, transfer it to a serving bowl.
For tadka:
• Now it is time for creamy and smoky tadka/tempering.
• Heat ghee in a tempering pan and add cumin seeds to it. When they crackles add asafetida, garlic paste & red chili powder to it.
• Immediately pour it on the dal. You do not need to stir it.
Hot, tempting, smoky, flavorful & creamy Dal tadka is ready to serve. You can serve it with steam rice/jeera rice or Indian breads like roti, naan, kulcha etc.
Dal Tadka Tips:
• Soaking is required to reduce cooking time.
• Instead of ghee and oil both you can use only ghee or only oil as per choice.
• Proportion of dals/lentils can be changed as per requirement.
